Allow me to begin this story by saying…
My Pa was not in the best health during the last few years of his life. Pa was one of the sweetest, most gentle men in the whole world. I was always very close to him and my Mimi and I grew up spending almost every weekend with them.
My Mimi and Pa are my dad’s parents. I was really young when my parents divorced but my mom always got along with my grandparents.
When I was about 6 months pregnant with Amelia, my mom and I went for a visit at my Mimi and Pa’s house after my baby shower. My Pa wasn’t doing too well. He had been diagnosed with Parkinson’s Disease which we later found out was actually Lewy Body Dementia.
Side note: I was wear a wearing a maternity top that my mom had made for me. It was pink like Pepto and gathered in the front to make room for my huge belly. However, it made me look bigger than I actually was.
We were sitting on the couch and Mimi had gone to go get Pa so they could eat lunch. They passed right by us and he hadn’t noticed we were there. After they sat at the table, he looked over and saw us and then looked back at Mimi. “Who’s the fat one on the end?” he asked her. Mimi quickly said “That’s Angela! That’s your granddaughter and she’s pregnant with your great-granddaughter!” He then looked at me again, did the “what’s up” head nod and said “Looking good.”
Momma and I were doing our best not to laugh out loud because we could tell Mimi was appalled.
That is one of my most favorite stories! We all laugh about it now and even when I remind her of the story, she just snickers a little, shakes her head and tells me how he would never had said anything to hurt me. I tell her that I know that, without a shadow of a doubt. He always called me Sport… I miss him terribly. But, I know I’ll see him again.
